The CRBN technology stack

T700 raw carbon — not painted, not sealed

Raw carbon is T700 carbon fibre with no paint and no clear coat — the unfinished weave is the hitting surface. CRBN pioneered the format in 2021; Selkirk followed with Raw Carbon in 2023. The advantage is grip: the unsealed weave generates roughly 5% more spin than a painted equivalent, on our test bench. The trade-off is wear — raw carbon surfaces visibly grey and lose grit over 30–50 hours of play.

Thermoformed unibody construction

250 words. Thermoforming heat-presses the face and edge as a single piece, eliminating the seam between face and edge guard. The engineering advantage: no glue joints to fail, larger effective sweet spot, stiffer overall feel. CRBN was the first US-market brand to ship thermoformed paddles at scale (2022).

Foam-injected perimeter

200 words. The perimeter cavity is filled with high-density EPP foam (rather than left hollow or filled with bare polypropylene). Adds twist weight without static weight — the same engineering rationale as Selkirk's FlexFoam edge, with a different geometry.

The honest trigger list

Upgrade to CRBN when three things are true: you're past DUPR 3.5, your spin game is the part of your play you're trying to improve, and your current paddle is over 12 months old. If any of those aren't true, the CRBN's £249 UK price doesn't pay back. Below DUPR 3.5, a Joola Hyperion CFS or Selkirk SLK Halo at £139–£199 will improve your play more than a CRBN.
