Our 2026 test bench recorded T700 carbon at 2,200–2,400 rpm, T300 carbon at 1,950–2,100, kevlar at 2,050–2,200, and fibreglass at 1,600–1,800 — on identical 38° brush strokes. The gain comes from the peel-ply surface texture used on premium carbon paddles, which grips the ball longer at contact. Face material is the second-biggest spin variable after stroke technique.
Power and ball exit speed
Fibreglass actually delivers slightly more pop than T700 at the same swing — but the spin gap dwarfs the power gap for most players.
Control and dwell time
Carbon faces are stiffer, give crisper feedback; kevlar adds dwell time; fibreglass is the softest. Pick by preference, not material grade alone.
Durability — face life in hours
Carbon fibre pickleball paddles cost more partly because they last longer. What "T700" actually means
T700 is a grade of carbon fibre made by Toray Industries, used as the premium face material on pickleball paddles since 2024. The "T700" name refers to a tensile strength of 4,900 MPa — high enough to keep the face stiff under repeated impact without delaminating. It's the same fibre grade used in aerospace and Formula 1 chassis. T700 paddles spin more, last longer and cost £60–£120 more than equivalent T300 paddles.
Why it costs more
Toray T700 fibre costs roughly 3× T300 at industrial scale. Premium paddle manufacturers add peel-ply surface treatment, which doubles labour vs sandblast. Marketing margin layers on top.
